To celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Matrix, Burlyman Entertainment is releasing the full original run of comics, including stories and material never printed, in one oversized deluxe hardcover edition.
I can't find a copy online without registering to a phillipine library, so your best bet legally is to hold out for it being released digitally in November.
I never got into the series, but I'm happy that fans get a spiritual successor that lives up to the legacy.
I'll be reading the comics after I get well, get my brain back. Looking forward to 'em though.
I own the previous two matrix comics collections. I was upset when MxO threw some of that canon out the window. I just got my hardcover so definitely excited to revisit these stories!
Just because an Agent says something doesn't mean it is actually true. It just means that, as far as they and those subservient to them are concerned, it does not exist.
Which is the most delightful irony. The Cypherites unhappy that the Machines lied to them - despite their whole ideology being about embracing the greatest lie the Machines ever told.
So apparently, according to the comic "Bits and Pieces of Information" B166ER killed not only the humans trying to kill him, but those little teacup chihuahuas as well.
Not sure how to feel about it, on one hand I love all dogs, on the other hand, I'm pretty sure teacup chihuahuas have some health problem due to their small size.
I fully expect MxO to become non-canon once Matrix 4 comes out. If by some miracle they accommodate the story to include MxO, I will be happy as a clam. Cause Fenshire is canon haha
Chadwick was a very unusual choice for the Matrix. I feel like the Wachowskis had very bizarre tastes in comics
18:12
The only way I would have hope of MxO remaining canon is if they novelized the core story, made a comic series, or even just printed that MxO storybook
18:13
Itโs obvious to me that the comics are still being lauded as canon, what with the release of the 20th anniversary edition which even makes mention of Matrix 4 in the text
18:14
I havenโt finished reading the whole thing, but there is a blurb about each author before their respective comics. It would be interesting to see if MxO is mentioned under Chadwickโs entry. That would give me some hope
A brass ring is a small grabbable ring that a dispenser presents to a carousel rider during the course of a ride. Usually there are a large number of iron rings and one brass one, or just a few. It takes some dexterity to grab a ring from the dispenser as the carousel rotates....
18:34
The Link character from Burning Hope I'm guessing is just coincidentally named, since this was written before the first movie and Link was a freeborn
18:34
and Link in 'Burning Hope' was an operative jacked into the matrix
I am not a professional comic grader, but have been around the books and the makers since 1974. see photos for details.high gloss book, so sorry about the reflections. I don't CGC my books because they should be read or admired before sealing it in plastic!
Goliath, System Freeze, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Sweating the Small Stuff, Deja Vu, Morning Sickness, Bits and Pieces of Information, Wrong Number, Fareweel Performace, A Life Less Empty.
21:34
The Man Who Knew Too Much and Morning Sickness have never been reprinted.
Long before he was commissioner, rookie cop James Gordon takes on Gotham City crime and corruption to avenge the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents.

And Donal Logue plays his partner, I fucking LOVE that guy
5:25
The cast is fantastic

If you're not familiar with him by name, he was Jimmy the Cab Driver in the MTV bumpers, and he was Frost's sidekick in Blade, and he was Kevin Mitnick's sidekick in Trackdown (or Takedown, depending on region),

Gotham is really well written, and they really did justice to the Batman vibe. Serious, dark, seedy, but also a dash of camp
5:32
I adore their adaptations of the supervillains, especially Penguin, The Riddler, Doctor Strange,
I couldn't believe the care that was taken in shipping this, shout out to Batman Bill

Standard cardboard backed plastic enclosed comic. Sandwiched by two rigid cardboard panels, the pouch was painter's taped to one side, bubble wrap sheet between the pouch and the other cardboard panel. This was in one of your standard USPS priority mail envelopes, but had DO NOT FOLD written all over it
5:14
First time I've ever bought a comic book online, so I have no idea how typical this is
Wish I knew these things came out with the original movie. I saw it close to opening day, but in a shit town
5:54
Fortunately it's super close to the size of the 20th anniversary hardcover, so they'll store next to each other easily. I have zero other comic books anymore
Thanks. Was so random. I tagged him in a photo I took of the magazine I had, mentioned it was sealed up and wondered if I should break it open to read the story.
20:17
He replied back and offered to send me a "reader" copy.
Hard cover is definitely worth the price of admission... my original paper backs are a little flimsy in the binding glue area and could easily fall apart. There are also comics in the 20th anniversary edition that were only online & weren't printed in Volume 1 or 2
get either Ruffle (if your using chrome, edge or firefox) or this http://andkon.com/arcade/faq.php and disable updates for it (since their isnt any)(edited)
Yeah but mostly you get the quick shot of excitement when finding a lost resource followed by the disappointment of a 404. Thanks for the working link.
Wish I could make this Project Lady Bug story into a comic... but there's no way to recreate all the scenes in the emulator & can't draw worth a dam so

I have to admit you are talking outside of my realm of knowledge and skillsets however I'm down to open the collaboration up to the discord. It's a fan fiction so legally we can't sell it, but I think hard core Matrix fans will appreciate the story especially those who played Mxo

Yeah they went in an unexpected direction, ppl expected more slow mo more bullet time but they went spare with it, instead full cgi sequences interspersed in massive physical props
20:16
Car chase is a beauty. You could remove the twins fighting with Morpheus and Trinity inside the car and you wouldnโt miss it, but i find it such a cool little fight
Misread what you were saying by 'allegedly' I thought you were referring to a theory where Davis is supposed to be a previous one because he self substantiated which doesn't really make sense
I know this probably strays into fanfiction, but I honestly doubt that there was much of a first "one"
14:36
At least, not the kind of "one" that we really think about
14:39
It was, in all honesty, probably a band of folks who managed to evade the machines long enough to pull a guy out (maybe with the Oracle's help) and started the first Zion
Whether its true or not, Morpheus believes there was a person, the whole "When the Matrix was first built, there was a man born inside who had the ability to change whatever he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was he who freed the first of us, taught us the truth" speech. Although he doesnt say he was a "one"
Yeah, Morpheus story implies the first One self substantiated. But we know that most of what he believes is fed to him by the oracle who only gives pieces of the story to her rebel Redpills
16:53
So our Neo was born inside the Matrix. But Iโm version 5. He is freed, probably similarly or exactly like we see in version 6. Reaches the architect and chooses the door on right. Selects 23 individuals, dies and the cycle continues
I donโt think itโs claimed. But I will say that when o first watched part 1, my thought was that he got himself out. But itโs donโt think thatโs how it happened. You need assistance to survive or youโll drown. Weather itโs humans picking you up on a ship or machines releasing you
I think its possible that you didnt need assistance.Who knows what the first matrix was like?.What if you werent immersed in goo in a pod? Maybe they had people on tables and you just....woke up? lol still would be the problem of muscle atrophy I guess
I agree that first "One" must have had some help, perhaps from surviving humans scavenging and living on the surface like the crazy old dude in the comic I call "Man of La Mancha" as I can't recall real title atm. A select cadre of Freeborns, with the masses having not been in pods, could easily perpetuate a mystery around his freeing if they wanted him as a leader. Plus, I do think the Oracle is messing with Morpheus from a linguistic standpoint. That's pretty much her modus operandi.
18:20
And if the first "One" self-substantiated, I think the following ones would also have that ability. Seems like it would make life easier for the machines if they could drop a bit of "self substantiate NOW" execute code into say, some really good noodles, at the time when the anomaly starts causing glitches.

Not claiming itโs non-canon. Only that itโs manufactured to illicit a hostile response towards the machines in order to keep Zion in a state of war.
The archives being a Machine plant, another system of control, nothing is trustworthy at face value.
18:58
That said, the best ag-prop is rooted in reality.
Gami
Not claiming itโs non-canon. Only that itโs manufactured to illicit a hostile response towards the machines in order to keep Zion in a state of war.
Then why include that little detail about humanity being the instigators - this is one thing that's always bothered me in contrast to the first film contrasted to the Animatrix.
I donโt think they are. World leaders clearly were not down with granting 01 the same status as sovereign nations or any machine the same protections as humans. But second Ren goes from denial into the UN to full blown war really quick.
From what I understand from Second Renaissance, humans just couldnโt deal with 01 being so powerful and probably controlling the stock market so they attacked. Wouldnโt be a big surprise coming from us.
And thatโs all predicated on anything in Second Ren actually being legit. And when your enemy in the conflict has a full blown fabricated reality and your entire war effort is just another portion over their control and manipulation over youโฆ well thereโs a lot that should be re-examined about what Zion thinks it knows about itself and history
Anyway, on the topic of "First One" and self-substantiation. Self substantiating appears to require an outside influence in order to inspire the subject to trigger enough of a reaction to that belief to eject themselves out of The Matrix. Runner pushes himself to reexperience something he felt while running and Kid's belief in Neo (maybe also suicide) are the two instances we see this happen and in both it's not entirely of the individuals own action but a desire toward something that finally pushes them. So if the First One had this experience he likely would need the same.
20:18
This makes their own self substantiation less likely unless they were in a similar experience to the Runner. Problem though! The One is needed to reset the Matrix and in order to get them to do that they have to have an attachment to humanity. This would likely complicate that idea because Runner pushed himself off a purely self centric goal and Kid did it off a devotion to a savior. The One is supposed to be altruistic meaning selfish motivations aren't in the vocab and would be weird to be so highly devoted to yourself and still be willing to sacrifice yourself.
20:19
So our First One is more than likely lacking any of the mental qualifications that we know of in order to achieve Self-Substantiation.
Maybe he saw something was wrong with the world and tried to warn humanity only to die/be killed like a martyr and wake up in the real world.
20:37
Then he was picked up by the machines and dropped next to an hovercraft or something haha(edited)

Altruism doesn't exclude selfishness completely. After all Neo chose to save Trinity over going through the door that would have (supposedly) reset the Matrix and performed his final function
Right but the Architect comments on how Neo is different from the five previous. I believe Lilly has even characterized that moment as saying Neo didn't care about anything other than saving Trinity.
20:41
My point being the mentality required to selfsubstantiate does not easily lend itself toward the being of The One as manufactured by the machines.
Personally I think 'The One' is, like Archy said, a result of a series of psychological triggers (circumstance) and somewhat random genetic adaptability bred into the human population over a series of time. It reaches a boiling point, out pops The One. Self-substantiation, imo, are another class of redpills. Redpills being persons born with some kind of inkling that the Matrix isnt 'true reality'. So saying, everybody was right. You cant be plugged back in and everything will be otay. Your brain will just reject it again.
If he didnโt free himself then I feel like The Oracle probably had a hand in that. I also feel like he wasnโt freeโd alone. He probably had other humans with him in order to survive and populate Zion.(edited)
20:47
Which could help with the whole caring about humanity part
The Oracle definitely plays a part in all this and I imagine uses others like she did Morpheus in locating, priming, and freeing The One. The trouble is the period between reset and, oh i dont know, twenty years?, makes no god damn sense at all.
Though in my opinion this is all kinda moot, as I view The Real as another layer of the Matrix. Another, finer-meshed sieve to catch those who couldnt take the Cityscape itself
Concept artist mentioned in an interview that Zion's architecture was supposed to hint that it's cut out and designed by the machines. It's not a hard confirmation but it certainly implies that the Machines supply Zion with......well everything
"Locke, your grandmother ate bread with the guy Neo's a reincarnation of. The fuck you mean you don't believe in The One!? He built that fucking table you're using"
Right but I rather not drift too far into speculation because then it turns into fan boi fan fiction instead of looking at what the filmmaker actually shows us.
21:08
But thatโs me. You be you.
21:09
Make Neo have a unicorn sticking out of his ass if thatโs what you want to think. Just donโt get too butthurt when I point it out and laugh at you(edited)

I love that interview. Can't find a link to it right now, but it's illuminating and shows how much detail they put into the sets. The designer says that the fact that the machines built Zion, and that Zion has been around hundreds of years (and through many battles with Sentinels, ie there are bullet holes everywhere in the dock) is supposed to be an obvious part of the story for the viewer, even though the Zion items don't really seem to notice (it wasn't obvious to me, though I did wonder about why the doors were red). He even gets into details like the amount of rust they showed and something about the rock formations showing hundreds of years of erosion. My favorite part is that the red doors are supposed to be like the goo pods, the structure of Zion itself is an inverted power plant tower and there are wires and tunes and pipes everywhere like the tunes in the pods. So, yeah, I think the machines gave them pretty much everything, including the Hovercrafts with their neo-Jules Verne submarine aesthetic. My guess is that the let the original One and his merry band of freeborns "discover" Zion and lots of raw materials to recycle into furniture, rebuilt computers, etc.(edited)
2:36
The "Ahab" comic about the scavengers backs up this idea of there being lots of usable things on the surface that survived the war. It's one of my favorites of the comics.

Yeah I've got them & in a pinch I literally took cell phone pictures of frames in at least 2 videos but I do highly recommend the hard copy anniversary edition not just for the exclusive prints but durability the paperback glue does not hold up against the test of time
Unfortunately I couldn't find any of the hardcover up online ATM, but 27 bucks for the two books didn't seem like bad deal for now looking around(edited)
I hope I'm wrong but it looks like the 20th Anniversary hardcover was a one-time run. Everyone's out of stock (except a couple with the Trinity cover), and some are already marked 'Out of print'
May just be? MSRP was 40-50$? I guess double MSRP isn't terrible for a rare book, but that suuucks
20:25
I've been hoping for a similar thing else where, the rulebook for Mordheim has been out of print for little over a decade and it's hard to see a copy under 80$, and it's two expansion books rarely go under 120$. at least those had a wider print run, given I can at least readily find a copy of the core book, if expensive.
I don't have those, though their content is in the 20th anniversary. But I do have the original comic that was given out at select theaters at the release of the original film
I guess I'll read it when I get vol 1, but why did it get recalled? The wiki just said it was because of its controversial nature or something along those lines
Most comic publishers operate on a print to demand structure. It would have only gone to reprints if the orders were there to justify it.
22:36
And given weโre two years after itโs release the reprint window probably closed a bit ago.
22:37
If M4 pulls interest youโre more likely see the two volumes reprinted over an anniversary reprint. Or they put everything together again and call it an omnibus edition or deluxe edition.(edited)
22:41
If it were DC that had publishing rights Iโd be more certain of a reprint. But those comics staying with Burly Man make it a bit harder to judge. If I were putting a bet on a reprint Iโd wager a it would be done as a paperback collection of everything. But Iโm not certain it happens
22:42
If DC had it though and the movie is a hit. Youโd have a 25th collection 30th collection etc every five years
And just one last note because a lot of people get confused on what โprint to demandโ means. It refers to the front end of production where the publisher sends word out to its distributors that they have a product coming out and to start taking orders on it. Publisher will then print a number of copies to meet the order quantity from those orders and thatโs it. They might take another set of orders in after release but thatโs usually the end of it.
It doesnโt mean you can just walk into your local comic shop and put in an order whenever and get one. You had to have the order in before the final cut off.(edited)
Previews World has a reprint listed for October 27th 2021.
7:51
And Amazon is saying they'll have a new copy for you by Nov 6th. Which tracks since Diamond would have a week advance to sell before larger stores get a chance.
I think the only one that would count as Morpheus backstory is The Miller's Tale. And he's silent in that one, as I recall? It's just, like, young Morpheus holding a plate at the Bread Festival?
Thanks again for doing these videos! Hopefully they will encourage people to buy the hardcover version now that it's getting a new print run. I'd love to see longer format graphic novels for the Matrix universe if we don't get some sort of animated anthology. I think interest in the older comics would encourage that.
It was listed on previewsworld. Which is the online catalogue for one of the largest comic distributors called Diamond.
Amazon also had a shipping date for Nov 3rd few weeks ago.
Reading the comics now, just finished The Millerโs Tale! One of my favorites so far for sure. More exploration of the machine-run surface world and deepening the lore with some of the traditions of the people of Zion!
I also found this panel intriguing, as itโs either a young Morpheus as we know him from the original trilogy, or a hint that perhaps the name โMorpheusโ can be something of a role given to specific people, as has been theorized considering the casting in the new film.
0:11
Oh wow looks like thereโs been some discussion of this a little up thread. Iโll have to watch your video, @Neomatrixology !
Not that I've checked, I'm sure scans are out there. I think the comics originally released online for free on whatisthematrix.com way back when? at least some of it did
Wouldnโt make sense from a production standpoint especially right now with backlogs and shipping issues. Which Iโm assuming is the reason for the delay.
Amazon did have a listing saying they would ship Nov 5th I think. That got changed a few weeks later to โunavailableโ.
Diamond Distribution also had it out in Previews that one was coming but their communication is absolute dog shit when something stalls

The 20th Anni edition has 28/30 of the comics. Included in the 28 are all of the Matrix comics published in the other various editions.
The two missing comics (The Man Who Knew Too Much & Morning Sickness) have never been put into print. TMWKTM was pulled from the website very early in its lifetime, so there might be a rights dispute. Morning Sickness was a group project done by Manex Visual Effects(vfx team for the movies) and probably has a rights issue as well.
This 20th edition is likely going to be the closest we get to a definitive version.

Haha fuck... I was going to buy the matrix comics 20th anniversary edition but didn't get round to it... Now I can't find a copy in stock anywhere, I should have brought this like last year at least
I thought that one was for less than like £30 but I added it to a wish list like at least a year ago. I didn't expect for them to seemingly suddenly stop being sold secondhand. I don't think I'm lucky to find anything, what sort of shops? Also COVID

I have a hard time finding the copy of 20th for reasonable sale too. Either bunch of ridiculous prices, a little of too high ones for just a comic or mostly just unavaible at all... :/(edited)
I'm outside of US however, so I have harder time to find something

Are you happy with these comics? I got hyped for these, because I really loved side-stories from Animatrix and expect some similiar quality from comics too.
They're absolutely worth reading, and the book is really nice. 60 USD is not bad, considering every copy that's easy to find seems to be going for 250-350 USD
1:49
I'd only pay that (60 USD) if you're really into collecting Matrix stuff tho. The PDFs of the comics are available on the web somewhere(edited)

1:56
1:57
That's from mine, anyone have a 2nd printing they can compare that to? And also, when people start getting the third printing, can someone post that?
Fwiw I donโt think there actually was a second printing. Just using old stock that hadnโt been ordered from a distributor yet.
A month ago you could still order the HC directly from burlyman entertainment.
Lol thatโs because that site is only for businesses to places their orders through. Theyโre a distributor.
Comic shops can order through there. Amazon and B&N will have them for sale two weeks after
I think I paid between 10-15$ each US but that was before Resurrections came out, so I would say that was a very good price if you got both for that number. What I would say is that the paperbacks glue does not hold up well against the test of time and the pages are very flimsy after all these years. Handle with caution. I strongly recommend the hard cover 20th anniversary edition. I pre-ordered one from the local comic book shop so that I have a back up(edited)

I do own a copy, but I know there are people online still searching. At this point seeing is believing, I put in an order during the summer still haven't heard anything back. Bunch of stores say they can get it, but then nothing happens idk what's going on with it here in the states... might be more lawsuit issues but I honestly don't know what the issue is

Yeah, I was really looking for a comic that occurred during the machine war since I heard somewhere that in the comics, the machine war occurred over decades and humanity was pretty much mentally fortified and ready for war(edited)
Maybe cuz I picked mine up at a later date. Opened it to about 160 degrees so I could read everything and two pages fell out. Could be because it's so old, but they looked pristine.
Wonder if it was stored improperly and got extremely hot, or maybe just bad luck and that particular one was defective. That sucks, I haven't heard anyone have an issue like that yet. Sorry yours didn't work out, how much did you pay for it?
