[ Chapter 8.3 (part 24) - Compilation And Transportation ]
As I check the machine for signs of life, like a flashing light, a little hum, or a slight beep, I don't see or hear anything. There is no indication that the machine is compiling, or that it is even running at all. Urchin looks as concerned as I feel right now.
The wind-driven rain, hitting the nearby window, and chattering on the sill, sounds like giggling and chuckling. It's mixing with the odd sounds from the other machinery in the lab, creating a form of mechanical music, straight from digital hell. This must be how insanity begins..
Urchin interrupts the demonic melody by saying, "Isn't something supposed to happen? I mean, like a ding, or a bell, or a light flashing, or.. anything?"
I shrug my shoulders and say, "The Alchemist said that this was the button with the magic, and that pressing it gets it going; just press it, and wait."
She frowns and says, "So, how long do we wait? How long is it supposed to take?"
I say, "I don't know; the Alchemist said he had no idea either. I asked him several times, but he kept saying that it was too variable to know. I can't even tell if it's running or not.."
Barely audible, I hear a phone ringing, somewhere on this floor, down the hall? I say to Urchin, "Do you hear that?"
She looks at me with big eyes and nods. We quickly exit the lab, moving down the hall.. Second ring, near the end of the hall, I'm now walking much faster.. Sounds like it's coming from the conference room.. Third ring, I'm almost to the conference room door, Urchin is tracking right behind me.. As I open the door, I see a man with his back to us; he interrupts the fourth ring by picking up the handset, placing it to his ear, and saying, "I'm in." Gently dropping the handset back into it's cradle, and turning to face us, the Alchemist says with a big smile, "Did you miss me?"
